THIS TOUR INCLUDES:
NOTES:
Discover the secrets of ancient Roman mosaics and create your own masterpiece!
A fun and hands-on private workshop with an expert mosaic artist – a creative experience for the whole family!
Have you ever wondered how the Romans created those incredible colourful mosaics that still decorate the floors and walls of ancient buildings?
Now you can discover the secrets of this ancient art – and, even better, make your own mosaic!
FROM ANCIENT ROMAN MOSAICS TO YOUR OWN MASTERPIECE!
Mosaics were everywhere in ancient Rome.
Romans used tiny pieces of stone, marble and glass – called tesserae – to decorate their homes, public buildings and baths. They created colourful scenes representing animals, gods, gladiators, food, nature and everyday life.
During this experience, children and adults will discover how Roman mosaic artists worked and why this technique was so important in the ancient world.
But this is not just a lesson about mosaics.
It’s time to become mosaic artists yourselves!
Let’s discover the secrets of the ancient mosaic artists and let’s use them to make our modern mosaic! The whole family will be involved in a unique experience!
We will be in a real mosaic workshop, where an experienced mosaic artist will introduce you to the materials and techniques used to create a mosaic.
First, you will choose your design, then you will learn how to work with the small coloured pieces and arrange them to create your own composition.
Step by step, with the help of our expert artist, you will transform a simple drawing into a real mosaic.
And the best part?
You get to take your artwork home!
LEARN BY DOING
We will learn to make the mortar and discover how to use small stones instead of colors… it will be fun to discover that we are artists and we did not know it!
This is a hands-on experience designed especially for families.
Children can experiment with colours, shapes and patterns while learning how much patience, precision and creativity are needed to create a mosaic.
Adults are very welcome to join in too – in fact, this is an experience designed to be enjoyed together.
Forget computers and tablets for a couple of hours and use your hands to create something beautiful!
The workshop is suitable for children and adults and no previous artistic experience is required.

Let’s forget computers and tablets for a couple of hours and let’s use our hands to create something special, grown ups and and kids will live a unique experience, spending quality time together and learning something really new!
If you would like to take your mosaic experience a step further, you can also combine the workshop with a private family-friendly tour of the Baths of Caracalla.
The magnificent Baths of Caracalla were once decorated with spectacular marble floors, sculptures and colourful mosaics. Together with our guide, children will discover how the ancient Romans used these incredible decorations and what life was like inside one of the largest public bathing complexes of ancient Rome.
After seeing the ancient mosaics, you can then head to the workshop and become a mosaic artist yourself!
The Baths of Caracalla tour and the mosaic workshop can be booked together or separately, according to your preferences.
Please note: admission tickets to the Baths of Caracalla are not included in the mosaic workshop and are required only if you choose to add the guided visit.

EXCELLENT Based on 300 reviews Posted on Google Carla Buhl-de VriesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We made 2 private tours with Nicole: the baths of Caracalla and the Aqueducts. We were very happy with this friendly young woman, who knows a lot about ancient history. We will certainly join again, with Nicole, whenever we get back to Rome again!Posted on Google Gregg JacobTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Francesca was OUTSTANDING! Her energy and enthusiasm were palpable and contagious. Her knowledge of both art and history had all of us (aged 14-82) engaged for the entire tour. I highly recommend Joy of Rome and without question would request Francesca!!!Posted on Google Caroline Harding-EdgarTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We booked the Coliseum tour and the Rome Highlights tour for our family of 4 (girls aged 8 and 5), and would thoroughly recommend. Our guides (Francesca and Grace) were energetic, engaging and informative, and tailored the tours perfectly to our girls' interests and energy levels. The girls loved it and learned a lot - and so did we!Posted on Google Deepti AvasthiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Very nice tourPosted on Google Steven BalitTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had a fantastic private tour of the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel with our guide, Sarah from Joy of Rome. She clearly knew her way around this remarkable part of Rome and shared her deep knowledge with enthusiasm and clarity. Thanks to her insights, we gained a much better understanding of Vatican City and its significance to the Eternal City. Though it was only a two hour tour, it was incredibly rewarding, absolutely worth it and highly recommended.Posted on Google Jerek PetrousTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Joy of Rome is an exceptional tour company. We had great experiences, but Serena was seriously the best guide we’ve ever had in all the countries we’ve been to. Can’t recommend her enough!Posted on Google Andrea McCormickTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Fabulous tour with Francesca - she was great with kids, kept them engaged for 2 hours, we all learnt lots and had a really great time. Thanks for making our trip to the Colosseum so memorable!Posted on Google Noelle BrennanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Angela gave us a fabulous tour of the Forum, Palatine Hill and the Pantheon. It was fantastic! Her knowledge and enthusiasm was far beyond our expectations! I would highly recommend her!Posted on Google Carolyn GiererTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Joy of Rome and our tour guide Nicole made our Colosseum experience a great one. I couldn’t have imagined taking a 4 and 5 year old into the colosseum without her. She brought a cute book, had print outs that my kids loved (and she let us take home) and completely curated the experience for families with young kids. 10/10 recommend if you are traveling with kiddos.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
