How about spending a few hours in complete relaxation, just as the ancient Romans did nearly 2,000 years ago, with a tour of the Baths of Caracalla?

Jump into the past and visit the magnificent Baths of Caracalla, a family tour away from the crowd.

Your family will have a unique opportunity to learn all about the ancient world with an expert guide while having fun in a safe, quiet, green archaeological area!

We will visit one of the favorite places of the citizens of the ancient Rome, built by Emperor Caracalla to spend time working out, doing business and taking care of one’s body!

Your expert guide will show you that the baths (THERMAE in Latin) not only housed the hot, warm and cold pools: they offered much more; let’s find it out together experiencing a morning in just the same way citizens would have done 2000 years ago!

The spa guests would enter the locker room where they would change and pay a servant to watch over their personal belongings. At that time the baths were full of thieves… and lockers had not been invented yet!

Once they were ready, visitors to the baths could choose different to spend time in, such as the exercise yards where they could train alone or with friends, play ball, run or fight. They could also possible to get a massage or work on their tan before diving into one of the many pools!

After a nice dip into a hot bath they would have then enjoyed the warm water pool and finally a cold water pool. Romans were very fond of this trio of different temperature pools and believed their bathing method was very good for their health!

During the summer months the place to relax was in the natatio, a large outdoor pool. Here’s a curiosity: on the edge of this big pool were found the traces of an ancient Roman game, kind of like chess and very popular at the time among both young and older Romans!

You will be surprised by the grandeur of the building… just imagine, these baths could host more than 1,500 people at once and access was open for all Roman citizen: men, women, children, old, young, rich and poor!

How were these large areas heated?

How were these large areas heated?
Your guide will tell you all about what went on behind the scenes: servants hidden in the basement added fuel to furnaces and wood stoves … the hot air and water pipes that heated the complex are still preserved!

The baths were open daily from dawn to sunset and one could spend the whole day there: important citizens would discuss politics here rather than in the Senate Hall and ladies would meet here to gossip, discuss the latest fashion and choose a good wife for their children!

Your kids will be struck by these incredible Baths, built by Emperor Caracalla in 217 A.D. They are the best preserved example of public baths in Rome and the second largest in the world, second only to the Baths of Diocletian.

These pools were not the only attraction for ancient Romans!
The bath complex was surrounded by shops, offices, halls for conference and lectures and a Latin and Greek library.
Yes, you read it right, libraries! Romans believed that the baths had to heal the body and the mind!
