Are you fascinated by this stunning piece of architecture? Want to know more about it? Not interested in standing in a line or being stuck in a Museum? Are you on a budget?
Visit St. Peter’s Basilica and its magnificent square with one of our licensed, local, Roman guides: we will reveal the history and secrets of this magnificent church, built by Michelangelo, and its spectacular baroque colonnade, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
Forget about endless lines and strict rules, open your eyes wide, be ready with your camera and discover the largest Church in the world! This tour is not just about art history: it is about the intriguing role of the Popes, who, for centuries, ruled Italy and Europe!
284 splendid columns surround St. Peter’s Basilica, a symbolic welcome embrace to all the faithful visiting here for the past 5 centuries!
Pope Alexander VII Chigi commissioned Bernini to design the stunning colonnade, who arranged the rows of columns to create an intriguing optical effect that will enchant you…look for the spot where the columns disappear… Baroque art is an endless surprise!
The procedures of a Papal conclave will have no secrets for you after this tour! Our guides will show you the roof of the Sistine Chapel where a chimney is built during each conclave to reveal if a new pope has elected of not: you will see the Balcony of the Blessings and the windows of the Pope’s apartment!
Did you know that this is the second Basilica of St Peter’s?
The first one was erected around 320 by Emperor Constantine in the place where, according to tradition, the apostle Peter was buried. Over the centuries, and under different pontificates, the long process – about 200 years – of construction progressed under the supervision of such artists as Bramante, Michelangelo and Bernini and would lead to the complete makeover of the first church.
Michelangelo’s Dome will take your breath away, with its enormous size, beautiful shape and colourful mosaic decoration!
And if this was not enough to make you breathless, after the end of our tour you can climb – at you own pace – to the top of the dome and enjoy a stunning view of the city!
See the monumental tombs of the popes and of important ladies of the past. Raise your eyes to see the splendour of Bernini’s canopy and don’t be scared by the embalmed bodies displayed in this Church, too!
Did you know that the Vatican State is protected by Swiss Guards? Not Vatican citizens nor Italians. For 500 years the Swiss Guards have protected the gates of Vatican City… let’s see if they will let us take a picture together?
No long lines, no tickets to pay, no photo restrictions, just treasures for both your eyes and heart and the pleasure of visiting this Church and learning its history and secrets … we will do our best to make this experience unforgettable!

EXCELLENT Based on 300 reviews Posted on Carla Buhl-de VriesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We made 2 private tours with Nicole: the baths of Caracalla and the Aqueducts. We were very happy with this friendly young woman, who knows a lot about ancient history. We will certainly join again, with Nicole, whenever we get back to Rome again!Posted on Gregg JacobTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Francesca was OUTSTANDING! Her energy and enthusiasm were palpable and contagious. Her knowledge of both art and history had all of us (aged 14-82) engaged for the entire tour. I highly recommend Joy of Rome and without question would request Francesca!!!Posted on Caroline Harding-EdgarTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We booked the Coliseum tour and the Rome Highlights tour for our family of 4 (girls aged 8 and 5), and would thoroughly recommend. Our guides (Francesca and Grace) were energetic, engaging and informative, and tailored the tours perfectly to our girls' interests and energy levels. The girls loved it and learned a lot - and so did we!Posted on Deepti AvasthiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Very nice tourPosted on Steven BalitTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had a fantastic private tour of the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel with our guide, Sarah from Joy of Rome. She clearly knew her way around this remarkable part of Rome and shared her deep knowledge with enthusiasm and clarity. Thanks to her insights, we gained a much better understanding of Vatican City and its significance to the Eternal City. Though it was only a two hour tour, it was incredibly rewarding, absolutely worth it and highly recommended.Posted on Jerek PetrousTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Joy of Rome is an exceptional tour company. We had great experiences, but Serena was seriously the best guide we’ve ever had in all the countries we’ve been to. Can’t recommend her enough!Posted on Andrea McCormickTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Fabulous tour with Francesca - she was great with kids, kept them engaged for 2 hours, we all learnt lots and had a really great time. Thanks for making our trip to the Colosseum so memorable!Posted on Noelle BrennanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Angela gave us a fabulous tour of the Forum, Palatine Hill and the Pantheon. It was fantastic! Her knowledge and enthusiasm was far beyond our expectations! I would highly recommend her!Posted on Carolyn GiererTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Joy of Rome and our tour guide Nicole made our Colosseum experience a great one. I couldn’t have imagined taking a 4 and 5 year old into the colosseum without her. She brought a cute book, had print outs that my kids loved (and she let us take home) and completely curated the experience for families with young kids. 10/10 recommend if you are traveling with kiddos.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
