The Artist of the Popes: GIAN LORENZO BERNINI City stroll
THIS TOUR INCLUDE:
Gian Lorenzo Bernini needs no introduction, he simply is one of the most famous artists of our era. In his long life he met seven different Popes and, for most of them, he has been a voice and a symbol. He changed, with his works, the face of Rome and he created some of the most important and memorable works of the whole city. Let’s discover his genious in this “Bernini Private Walking Tour”
The architectural and sculptural works of Bernini in Rome are numerous and with this walking tour we will discover some of the most important and surprising ones.
Not only that! The exploration of the works of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and their evolution over the years will be an opportunity to retrace the events of his private life, to get to know the man behind the artist, and discover frailty, strengths, his determination, his courage and, sometimes… his tendency to bully, too!
It is famous his lifelong competition with the less fortunate Francesco Borromini! We will discover what turned the two artists into enemies and what led Borromini to a tragic decision.
The Bernini tour will begin with a visit to one of the most interesting churches in Rome, Santa Maria della Vittoria: here we will see the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa and recall the reactions that this unique work of art aroused over the years. We will then be heading to Saint Andrea al Quirinale, to discover Bernini as an architect, as well as a sculptor, and we will finally reach Piazza Barberini where two fountains built by the artist stand out.
Did you think there was only one fountain, the one of the Triton? Well… you are wrong…!
Gian Lorenzo Bernini worked with water for his whole life, since when he was very young and helped in creating the “Barcaccia”, the famous fountain at the Spanish Steps. We will see the house where he lived for years and we will visit the church of Sant’Andrea delle Fratte, which houses two of the angels he made for the Bridge of Sant’Angelo, right in front of the Angel Castle.
Not always Bernini managed to do all he wanted, the way he wanted…
Even this genius of the Baroque age had his dark moments, as you will discover, while listening to the story of the Pantheon’s bell towers, the Propaganda Fide Palace and the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva.
After recalling the hilarious story of the famous marble elephant decorating the center of the square, we will visit the Church, one of the most beautiful in Rome, and admire two funeral monuments made by the artist!
With the Fountain of the Four Rivers Gian Lorenzo Bernini reached a perfect harmony between sculpture and architecture: its beauty will leave you speechless!

EXCELLENT Based on 300 reviews Posted on Carla Buhl-de VriesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We made 2 private tours with Nicole: the baths of Caracalla and the Aqueducts. We were very happy with this friendly young woman, who knows a lot about ancient history. We will certainly join again, with Nicole, whenever we get back to Rome again!Posted on Gregg JacobTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Francesca was OUTSTANDING! Her energy and enthusiasm were palpable and contagious. Her knowledge of both art and history had all of us (aged 14-82) engaged for the entire tour. I highly recommend Joy of Rome and without question would request Francesca!!!Posted on Caroline Harding-EdgarTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We booked the Coliseum tour and the Rome Highlights tour for our family of 4 (girls aged 8 and 5), and would thoroughly recommend. Our guides (Francesca and Grace) were energetic, engaging and informative, and tailored the tours perfectly to our girls' interests and energy levels. The girls loved it and learned a lot - and so did we!Posted on Deepti AvasthiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Very nice tourPosted on Steven BalitTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had a fantastic private tour of the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel with our guide, Sarah from Joy of Rome. She clearly knew her way around this remarkable part of Rome and shared her deep knowledge with enthusiasm and clarity. Thanks to her insights, we gained a much better understanding of Vatican City and its significance to the Eternal City. Though it was only a two hour tour, it was incredibly rewarding, absolutely worth it and highly recommended.Posted on Jerek PetrousTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Joy of Rome is an exceptional tour company. We had great experiences, but Serena was seriously the best guide we’ve ever had in all the countries we’ve been to. Can’t recommend her enough!Posted on Andrea McCormickTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Fabulous tour with Francesca - she was great with kids, kept them engaged for 2 hours, we all learnt lots and had a really great time. Thanks for making our trip to the Colosseum so memorable!Posted on Noelle BrennanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Angela gave us a fabulous tour of the Forum, Palatine Hill and the Pantheon. It was fantastic! Her knowledge and enthusiasm was far beyond our expectations! I would highly recommend her!Posted on Carolyn GiererTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Joy of Rome and our tour guide Nicole made our Colosseum experience a great one. I couldn’t have imagined taking a 4 and 5 year old into the colosseum without her. She brought a cute book, had print outs that my kids loved (and she let us take home) and completely curated the experience for families with young kids. 10/10 recommend if you are traveling with kiddos.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
